The Art of Smudging: A Beginner's Guide to Energy Cleansing

What Is Smudging?

Smudging is an ancient ceremonial practice rooted in Indigenous traditions that involves burning sacred herbs to cleanse a person, space, or object of negative energy. Today, it has been embraced by spiritual wellness communities around the world as a powerful ritual for clearing stagnant energy, setting intentions, and creating sacred space.

Whether you're moving into a new home, starting a new chapter, or simply feeling like your space needs a reset, smudging is one of the most effective and beautiful rituals you can incorporate into your life.

What You'll Need

Getting started with smudging is simple. Here's what we recommend from the Lunora Bloom collection:

  • Smudging Gift Set – White Sage, Palo Santo & Yerba Santa — This set gives you three of the most powerful smudging herbs in one beautifully curated package.
  • Selenite Healing Bowl — Use it to rest your smudge stick between uses and to catch ash safely. Selenite also amplifies the cleansing energy of your ritual.
  • Sacred Bloom Floral Hand-Carved Black Soapstone Bowl — A stunning vessel for burning loose herbs or catching embers during your smudge.
  • Anka Incense Holder or Kung Fu Turtle Incense Burner — Perfect for burning Palo Santo sticks with style and intention.

The Three Sacred Herbs

White Sage is the most widely used smudging herb. It has powerful antimicrobial properties and is used to clear heavy, stagnant, or negative energy from a space.

Palo Santo ("holy wood" in Spanish) is a sacred wood from South America used to invite positive energy, creativity, and good fortune. It has a warm, sweet, woody scent that many find deeply grounding.

Yerba Santa is used for protection, healing, and setting boundaries. It's especially supportive during times of emotional healing or when you need to strengthen your energetic field.

How to Smudge: Step by Step

  1. Set your intention. Get clear on what you want to release and what you want to invite in.
  2. Open a window or door. This gives the negative energy somewhere to exit.
  3. Light your herb. Hold your sage bundle at a 45-degree angle, light the tip, let it catch for 20-30 seconds, then gently blow it out so it smolders.
  4. Move through your space. Walk slowly through each room, wafting smoke into corners, doorways, and windows where energy stagnates.
  5. Speak your intention aloud. Try: "I release all energy that no longer serves me. I welcome in peace, clarity, and abundance."
  6. Extinguish safely. Press the tip firmly into your Selenite Bowl or Soapstone Bowl. Never leave a smoldering herb unattended.

How Often Should You Smudge?

Trust your intuition. Many people smudge weekly, while others reach for their smudge kit during key moments: after a difficult day, before meditation, at the new or full moon, or when moving into a new space.

A Note on Intention & Respect

Smudging has deep roots in Indigenous cultures. As you incorporate this practice into your life, approach it with reverence and gratitude for its origins, and source your herbs ethically and sustainably.
